Someone, at some point, is going to have to take up the mantle of Wolverine. And if a certain section of the internet has their way, that someone would be none other than Danny DeVito. Yes, Twins and It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia star Danny DeVito. This, according to a new petition that has been making the rounds online that is calling on Marvel to cast the actor as the new version of the fan-favorite Adamantium clawed mutant.
The petition was started by someone going under the name of Ring Arius. Hugh Jackman played the role for nearly two decades, starting with the very first X-Men movie in 2000, all the way up through 2017's Logan, which served as an absolutely excellent swan song for his version of the character. While it's going to be hard to accept anyone other than Jackman in those claws, this petition asserts that Danny DeVito is "the only man" who can do it. Here's what Arius states in the petition.
"The only man able to take the throne after Hugh Jackman. We believe that if Wolverine is to make an appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe that the only man able to pull it off is Danny Devito."
As of this writing, more than 4,400 people have signed the petition. They have the goal set at 5,000 and it seems like a sure bet that number will be met if not surpassed. At that point, what www.mmdst.comes of it? Almost certainly nothing, but it's not in any way a mean-spirited petition, so what's the harm in having a little fun?
Disney www.mmdst.completed their merger with Fox in March, meaning the X-Men will eventually be folded into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. So, at some point, we're going to have to www.mmdst.come to terms with a new Wolverine. As hilarious as the idea of Danny DeVito in the role may seem in some ways, it's easy to forget that Wolverine, in the www.mmdst.comics, is actually rather small and not the hulking man that Hugh Jackman is. Case in point, the late Bob Hoskins was actually an actor the studio had in mind for the role in the early days. In his younger years, DeVito fit a similar bill, and rumor has it that Danny was also being considered for the role. The actor has confirmed this in recent years, but it's hard to tell if he was joking. So, silly as this may be, it's perhaps not totally unsound. Just mostly.
There are tons of petitions like this one circulating online these days. Many of them, like the one calling for HBO to remake Game of Thrones season 8, www.mmdst.come from entitled, unhappy fans and represent an area of fandom that is generally seen as toxic. On the other hand, we have something like this, which is probably entirely harmless and fun, since it's not going to amount to anything and isn't having fun at anyone's expense.
